What is Osteopathy?Osteopathy is a form of non-invasive, drugless manual medicine where the practitioner restores the natural homeostatic function of the human body through structural alignment.
"Osteo" That's bones, right?‘Osteo’ is often immediately thought of as having to do with bone, which in common medical terminology is most often the case. However, in this instance the founder of Osteopathy (Andrew Taylor Still) was making reference to an older meaning of the word which refers to ‘structure’, wanting to evoke the idea of all structures of the body, not just the bones.
The ‘pathy’ part of osteopathy has often been misinterpreted to mean disease (leading many to believe that osteopathy is the study of diseases of the bone). In fact, in this instance the use of the suffix ‘pathy’ is more to do with pathos, or ‘suffering’. Therefore, “Osteopathy”, taking the nuanced uses of ‘osteo’ + ‘pathy’ into consideration gives us a term which is trying to convey the idea of the suffering of the structures of the body. Osteopaths have traditionally viewed discord in the structures of the body as the root cause of disease and ill health. |
How can osteopathy help you?
An osteopathic manual practitioner is trained to find the health within the tissue through musculoskeletal adjustment, thus removing obstructions that inhibit the body’s ability to self-heal and self-regulate. A practitioner’s focus on removing structural obstruction to nervous, circulatory and lymphatic vessels allows the body to restore its natural function, allowing the health of the body to flourish.
Osteopathic manual practitioners use their in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology and a wide-rage of manual techniques based on the principles of osteopathy. Practitioners search for the “why” of the dysfunction, treating people and not just symptoms, therefore osteopathy helps with an extremely wide-range of issues.
Osteopathy was introduced by founder Dr. A.T. Still in the 1870's and has grown exponentially in popularity through its success with patients of all ages and backgrounds. Osteopathy is a science, a philosophy, and a practice that focuses on facilitating the health of joints and muscles through non-invasive manual therapy, helping to strengthen the framework of the body.
